Description
Object of fierce fighting between July and October 1915, the summit of the Lingenkopf (called «Linge» by the French), is a major site of the First World War in the Vosges.
Several thousand French and German soldiers left their lives on this fiercely contested site. Despite their courage, the French alpine hunters cannot master the mountain’s summit, which soon takes the name of «tomb of the hunters».
Restored for almost fifty years, the battlefield is outstanding, since it is one of the few where it is possible today to walk through trenches. The German positions, dug in the rock and equipped with observation posts and concrete firing positions, are remarkably preserved and enhanced.
